The Village Within the City

The Sunnycrest Park Association (SPA) in Syracuse, NY, was formed in 2003 by three volunteers working in the park. It became an official association on March 22, 2004. Our goals are to work with the city and neighborhood groups to enhance and revitalize the park. Our membership is around 40 and growing. Sunnycrest Park is a gem in the neighborhood, and it takes a lot of hands and sweat to keep it polished. We strive to leave it better than we found it, and to pass on the park association for generations to come.

Sunnycrest Park Association Hosts BIKE Syracuse

Russell February 18th, 2008

Saturday Feb 16 the SPA hosted the BIKE Syracuse Youth group for a morning of skiing at Sunnycrest.  With new snow and grooming, the trails were in great shape!  About 20 youth from BIKE Syracuse took advantage of the free rentals and skied for two hours.  Thanks to Shawn Forney and Russ Houck for giving ski instruction, and thanks to Mike Behnke for the grooming.  We hope to see BIKE Syracuse again this year!

Sunnycrest Park Association Ski Club Races at Salmon Hills

Russell February 18th, 2008

SPA Ski Club members Adam Luban, Max Otteson, Matt Houck, Eric Houck, Kelvin Porter, Colby Porter, Caleb Porter, and Jesse Sleight raced at Salmon Hills on Sunday Feb 18.  The SPA team took second place overall (with Adam Luban nearly catching first).  All skiers put in a great effort under tough skiing conditions.  Skiers also raced through the ski-o course, some solo, some in teams, and some with parents.  Thanks to Judy Gianforte for setting up the ski-o course and to all volunteers at the race.  Also thanks to all SPA families for making the effort to get to Salmon Hills!  We are looking  forward to the Bill Koch festival in Rochester March 1 and 2.

Sunnycrest Bill Koch Club

admin December 28th, 2007

Hello All,

We’ve had a few good sessions of Wednesday night fun and will continue to meet at 5:30 on Wednesday, snow or not. There are a lot of fun activities and games that can build both skiing and fitness skills, as well as help to develop a sense of teamwork and support of teammates.

Salmon Hills in Redfield has announced a Bill Koch Harry Potter Weekend full of fun races and team events for January 5 and 6. We will have details on the weekend next Wednesday and encourage all Bill Koch skiers to come experience new trails, the camaraderie of the event, and the organization of a fun race. Registration will be on Saturday 10:30 to 12:30 followed by a classic (diagonal) race and then a Triwizard Tournament. Sunday will have registration 11:30 - 12:30 followed by Freestyle fun races and then sledding and games.

The cost of the event is the $7 trail fee, plus any food expenses. Parents will be encouraged to help out with the events. Lodging on site may still be available if you wish to stay overnight.

We’ll talk more about this on Wednesday, and then we’ll call in a RSVP for those interested on Thursday.

Think snow!
Judy

Yaay! Winter’s here!

admin December 19th, 2007

Unlike last year at this time, we have received a marvelous amount of snow this December so the park is dressed all in white and ready to welcome you. Sunnycrest Park gets thousands of visitors every winter for very good reasons. Don’t be left out in the warm! Our “Ski conditions” page is updated daily and there is more information on our “Winter” page (click the tab in the navigation bar). Time to put on some skis at the Ski Lodge and give it a whirl!

Sculpture unveiling at Mariani Peace Garden

admin September 5th, 2007

On Sunday, September 23rd, at 1:00 PM, Sen. John DeFrancisco will be at Sunnycrest Park to unveil the first of what we in the Park Association hope will be one of several pieces of sculpture that will adorn our park. With resources provided by the Senator and the Cultural Resources Council, Professor Ron DeRutte, from Syracuse University has created a piece for the Mariani Peace Garden, located at the end of Clifton Place (off James St.). All are invited to joint the Park Association and neighbors to attend the unveiling of this wonderful addition to our park.

Ron Derutte, a Texas native, has spent the last 18 years residing and working in Syracuse. He received an MFA in sculpture from the University of Maryland, College Park and a BFA in Graphic Design/Illustration from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Ron has taught various sculpture courses and has worked as the technician for the sculpture and ceramics facility at Syracuse University. He has done commissioned works for private individuals as well as public and private institutions and organizations nationally. Ron has also received various awards including a Penny McCall Foundation Grant.

“Making art is a direct reflection of my interest in the physical and psychological aspects of our lives. I have always felt that the eclectic nature of my work has been a part of its strength in that it reflects a certain honesty; both to myself and to the viewer. Bronze and steel have been the materials of choice as of late for they offer beauty, strength, and longevity.” (from MPH website)

A great workout in the park

admin August 28th, 2007

People can get pretty creative in the ways they use this park to relax, get some exercise, or both. A neighbor who walks through the park for exercise has used an online mapping system to calculate her route, the elevation changes, and even her calorie expenditure! You can learn more about it here.
